About
For the longest, Michael D. Garcia told people that he got into journalism because he wanted to inform voters, build relationships and empower voices from under represented communities. However, the truth is, Michael picked up a copy of Walter Cronkite’s autobiography “A Reporter’s Life” and thought to himself “I’d also like to put myself in uncomfortable situations.”
Currently, Michael writes for the Houston Chronicle as a breaking/trending reporter, covering a variety of beats including public safety, business, real estate, education and entertainment. He’s also a producer of a weekly newsletter, detailing news in a county north of Houston and has over 50,000 subscribers.
Previously, Michael has reported for Gannet | USA Today and Advance Local, covering local news in Maryland and New York. Michael was recognized by the MDDC Press Association for his coverage of the 2022 Maryland legislative session as well as a Robin Toner Prize recipient for his contribution to LehighValleyLive.com’s 2020 Presidential Election coverage in Pennsylvania.
In his spare time, Michael likes to write silly reviews on his LetterBoxd and procrastinate finishing a French screenplay he started 10 years ago.
